Samuel Morse Conceives the Telegraph
While sailing home from Europe, Samuel Morse sketches his first ideas for an electric telegraph system. A portrait painter by profession, he becomes obsessed with the idea of instant long-distance communication.
First Morse Code Developed
Morse and his assistant Alfred Vail develop the original encoding system. Unlike the modern International Morse Code, this early version uses variable-length dashes and spaces between dots.
"What Hath God Wrought"
On May 24, Morse sends the first official telegraph message from Washington D.C. to Baltimore. The biblical phrase marks the dawn of the telecommunications age.
International Morse Code Standardized
A conference in Berlin adopts a modified version of Morse's code, creating the International Morse Code (Continental Code). It simplifies the original by using only dots and dashes of consistent lengths.
International Telegraph Union Founded
Twenty European states establish the ITU in Paris to standardize international telegraphy. The International Morse Code becomes the global standard for wire communication.
Sputnik Beeps in Morse
The first artificial satellite transmits a simple radio signal — beep patterns that radio operators worldwide can receive. Space communication begins with the language of Morse.
New Morse Character Added: @
The ITU officially adds the "@" symbol (·−−·−·) to International Morse Code — the first new character in decades, acknowledging the email age.
