The Story

"Signalling is the means whereby the Command issues its orders to the three fighting Services." So wrote A. W. Eley in 1941, as Britain mobilized an entire generation of wireless operators. The Combined Services Wireless Telegraphy Training Centre in Leicester would train tens of thousands of cadets in Morse code — the backbone of military communication for over a century.

During World War I, electric telegraphs using Morse code were used throughout the war, on both sides. From the front line trenches to the officers, and from nation to nation via telegraph lines throughout Europe and underwater cables across the Atlantic. The interception of the Zimmermann Telegram — decoded by British Naval Intelligence — brought the United States into the war.

In 2026, Morse code persists in military doctrine because it works when nothing else does. Under EMCON (Emissions Control) conditions, when radio silence is required, a simple blinker lamp transmitting Morse between warships remains undetectable by electronic surveillance. The "Sound Language" approach developed by A. W. Eley at the Combined Services Wireless Telegraphy Training Centre in Leicester revolutionized how Morse code was taught. Rather than learning visual patterns of dots and dashes, cadets learned to recognize sounds — a fundamental shift that dramatically accelerated training times.

The original 9-week syllabus grouped characters by their rhythmic similarity: TMO (all dashes), EISH (all dots), AUV (rhythm letters), NDB, WJP, RLF, KCG, QYXZ, and finally Figures. This progression remains influential in modern Morse training methodology.

Abbreviated Numerals & Speed Procedures

In high-speed military Morse, operators use abbreviated numerals to save time. Instead of sending the full 5-element number codes, experienced operators send shortened versions known as "cut numbers." This practice originated in WWII when speed was critical and every millisecond counted during combat operations.

The most common cut number system uses T for 0, A for 1, U for 2, V for 3, and E for 5. So the serial number "599" in a contest becomes "5NN" (E-N-N), and "5739" becomes "E7V9" or even "ETVN" in the fastest operations. Military operators must be fluent in both full and cut numbers, switching between them depending on the operational context and the receiving station's capability.

During WWII, the Y-stations (interception posts) used cut numbers extensively in their internal logging. An intercepted message bearing might be logged as "QTH EATV" meaning frequency 1032 kHz. This saved precious seconds when thousands of messages were being processed daily.

EMCON Operations & Modern Doctrine

EMCON (Emissions Control) is a military doctrine that restricts electromagnetic emissions to prevent detection by enemy electronic warfare systems. In EMCON conditions, all radio transmissions are forbidden — but communication must continue. This is where Morse code via visual signaling becomes irreplaceable.

Modern naval EMCON operations use three primary Morse-based methods:

Signal Lamp (Aldis Lamp) — Directional light beam, visible only to the intended recipient. Range: 5-10 nautical miles. Speed: 8-12 WPM typical. Used for ship-to-ship communication in formation.
Infrared Blinker — Same as signal lamp but uses IR spectrum invisible to the naked eye. Requires NVG (Night Vision Goggles) to read. Undetectable by conventional optical surveillance.
Laser Communication — Extremely narrow beam, virtually undetectable. Used for high-security ship-to-ship or ship-to-submarine (periscope depth) communication. Still uses Morse encoding for reliability.

Special operations forces train Morse as a "last resort" communication method. If all electronic systems are compromised, jammed, or destroyed, an operator who knows Morse can communicate using any on-off signaling method: a flashlight, a mirror, tapping on a pipe, or even blinking their eyes. This redundancy is why Morse remains in military training syllabi worldwide in 2026.

The One Time Pad (OTP) combined with Morse represents the only provably unbreakable encryption system known to mathematics. A message encrypted with a truly random OTP and transmitted via Morse is immune to any computational attack — past, present, or future. This mathematical certainty is why intelligence agencies still maintain Morse capability for their most sensitive communications.
